By replacing Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) containing cleaning products with more environmentally friendly cleaners, NYGH has reduced its NPE effluents by 97%, and is now well below the Sewer Use By-law requirement. Furthermore, by installing a solvent still unit to recycle used laboratory solvents such as xylene, formaldehyde, and waste alcohols, NYGH has reduced hazardous waste generation by 75%, saving $20K in chemical purchases and disposal fees annually. CJ Graphics won bronze in two categories at the 2008 PrintAction Environmental Printing Awards held February 27th at Palais Royale in Toronto. The first, Most Progressive Environmental Process (printer), is awarded to companies based on "the implementation of a specific technology or process designed to reduce or eliminate practices harmful to the environment". The second, Most Progressive Environmental Packaging Project (rigid), is awarded to a "printing company or creative firm responsible for producing or implementing a particular packaging piece (or campaign) produced on a rigid substrate". Installation of a press wash recycling system at CJ Graphics' facility has resulted in 95% recovery and reuse of solvent. Project: Reduced use of CEPA toxics. Summary: This bulk trucking company eliminated the use
of solvents in their exterior cleaning process by using a soluble media
blasting technique with baking soda. The technique eliminates over 24
tonnes per year of methylene chloride. The return of investment was only
two and half months as the cost to treat the pollutants would have added
$162,000 per year to in-plant measures. For more information on the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment and the CCME P2 Awards, visit www.ccme.ca/ourwork/pollution.html.

In 2002, the CCME awarded its 6th annual Pollution Prevention Award in the medium business category to Informco Inc. of Scarborough, Ontario. As part of Informco's environmental initiative, this graphic solutions and lithographic printing company, identified pollution prevention opportunities and improved practices to achieve and realize these opportunities. One of Informco's major sources of pollution came from use of large quantities of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), a volatile organic compound and smog precursor used to stabilize the conductivity and surface tension of municipal water used in the printing process. Other pollution issues included open drums of solvent blanket wash and IPA allowing fugitive emissions.

The awards are presented to federal, state and local government agencies, as well as non-profit organizations and industry entities who have demonstrated significant achievements in pollution prevention. This year's recipients have reduced the amount of hazardous and solid waste by a combined total of 400 million pounds--equivalent to the weight of 200,000 automobiles. In addition, the winners reduced energy use by 300 million KwH, and water use by 200 million gallons. The organizations and their partners realized total cost savings of $70 million (U.S.). |
